What an amazing first Girls in Aviation Day for local WAI Chapter, Sierra Battle Born! 51 girls ages 5-18 spent a couple hours working through 10 different aviation related stations all run by incredible volunteers. Participants learned about Air Traffic Control, parts of a plane, how planes fly, the phonetic alphabet, how to read an aviation sectional, how to marshall an aircraft, cloud identification, heroes in aviation, as well as try on on flight gear and an opportunity to meet Becky Calder, the first female pilot Top Gun graduate. The Nevada Air National Guard was also on hand talking about different aviation careers in the military. During a built in break, the girls had a special visit from Amelia Earhart. An incredible event introducing the youth in our community to aviation. Thank you to our sponsors as well as Atlantic Aviation, the Nevada Air National Guard, and all of our amazing, hard working volunteers!

WAI, Sierra Battle Born member Koree is a private pilot!! Conversation between most kids on the first day of school: “What did you do over the summer?” “Nothing much. Just hung around. Slept late, ate food, annoyed my parents.” Conversation between Koree Bostrom and other kids on the first day of school. “What did you do over the summer?” “Me? I got a scholarship from the Reno Air Racing Association for flight training and earned my Private Pilots License!” A huge congratulations to this high school senior for taking the yoke by the horns, putting in the hours to study, the discipline to fly, and earning her certificate in eight weeks. As the first RARA recipients to earn their license, Koree has blazed a path that shows everyone how this should be done! We are very proud of you.
Meet Emma Harbaugh, our new Membership Chair! Emma is a Reno native and a UNR grad who started her aviation journey in 2013. Since then she worked her way up from CFI to airline pilot, flying for four different airlines along the way. She currently flies as a first officer on the Boeing 757/767 and is looking forward to training for a bigger airplane soon! She has thoroughly enjoyed all of the amazing experiences that being an airline pilot have given her, from all women crews to layovers in Hawaii, and hopes to share her excitement about the professional pilot career path with the chapter. In her free time she enjoys aerial silks, yoga, and hiking. Welcome aboard Emma!!
The Sierra Battle Born Chapter of Women in Aviation, in partnership with a local Reno flight school (Great Basin Aviation), hosted a Youth in Aviation Expo on Saturday, June 11th. The event included information about different careers in aviation, industry professionals, aircraft systems for a Cessna 172 and a C-130 engine (on loan from the Nevada Air National Guard), static display, Care Flight Pilatus and Helicopter, games, snacks, and more. The local flight school also took 44 kids on their first flight 🛫
